Airport Apron Lighting Specification Guide
Why We Created This Specification Guide
In any successful airfield lighting project, the process must begin with a clear project plan — defining the goals, operational needs, and performance requirements. From there, a lighting design should be developed to meet those needs. This design will determine the type, quantity, and layout of the luminaires, and should be the basis for creating a robust tender specification.

Too often, we see projects that start the other way around — with specifications written first, before any design work is done. This leads to mismatches between project goals and product capabilities. Lighting projects should always be design-driven. The specification should reflect the design — not dictate it.
But creating accurate and meaningful specs isn’t always easy. For aviation consultants and electrical engineers not deeply familiar with LED floodlighting technology, the process can be confusing.
That’s why we developed this guide — to simplify specification writing for Midstream lighting systems. It’s available in both Excel and PDF formats for easy use and integration into your documents.
What makes this guide different is that it doesn’t just tell you what to specify — it explains why each requirement matters and what could go wrong if it’s omitted. Too often, specs are stripped down because their purpose isn’t clear to the writer. Our goal is to provide the clarity and technical context needed to get it right.
Because in the end, a specification is only as strong as the understanding behind it — and the willingness to enforce it.
